The History of MHG Glass

The first Australian automotive glass plant was built in Geelong in 1936 and commenced operations in 1937 as Pilkington Automotive.

A new $50M facility with state of the art windscreen manufacturing was opened and commissioned in 2001.

Pilkington supplied glass to all local manufacturers in Australia including: Toyota, Ford, GM Holden, Mitsubishi, Chrysler and Nissan.

The first export contract to supply Corolla Windscreens to Toyota Motor Corporation Japan began in 1986. Since this time export contracts were also received from Mercedes Benz in Germany, Suzuki in Japan and Seat in Spain.

$50 million of capital has been invested in state of the art processing technology and world best practices since the year 2000.

Pilkington Australia was part of the Pilkington Group of Companies UK which was acquired by Nippon Sheet Glass (NSG) in June 2006 and was one of the 3 largest glass companies in the world.

On 29 June 2007 CSR Limited acquired 100% of Pilkington’s Australian and New Zealand businesses.

On 23 December 2009 CSR Limited sold the assets (land, buildings and processing equipment) of the automotive business to the MH Group and began operations as MHG Glass Pty Ltd on 4 Jan 2010.
